15. Groundbreaking Camera Technique

Think of a single scene from Rocky. Go on. I'll give you a second.

You're thinking of the Rocky steps scene, aren't you? Of course, you are! It's one of the most memorable scenes in the movie, one of the most iconic moments in cinema history. And it wasn't easy to pull off either.

Imagine carrying a 1970s era film camera while running backward up hundreds of stairs while Sylvester Stallone runs, full speed, towards you. Of course, that's not how they filmed it, though. They used a Steadicam.

Nowadays, we're used to Steadicam shots popping up in movies. But, at Rocky's time, the use of Steadicam had only been around for about a year. The filming technique debuted in the 1976 film, Bound For Glory.

With Steadicam, the camera operator wears a vest that is attached to the camera rig. The camera's weight is nullified, allowing the operator to move it with the touch of a fingertip. This allows smooth camera movements and makes it possible to run a camera upstairs and around corners.

Steadicam was also used in many training and jogging scenes. The camera technique was also used in the final fight scenes and can even be seen ringside in some shots.
