A key to understanding the Dude lies in the way he talks. Throughout the film, the Dude can be heard repeating dialogue spoken to him earlier in the movie. He cops a line from the George H. W. Bush speech he hears in the grocery store, he mimics Brandt at one point, and he even repeats a threat said to him earlier to the Nihilists later on.

This repetition does some excellent characterization for the Dude (even if you didn't pick up on this little tidbit until now). It shows how laid back and chill he is, allowing the words of others to essentially float in one ear, embed into his brain, and then drift out the other
