20 Things You Somehow Missed In The Mummy (1999)
17. A Mistake That's Not Really A Mistake
The Mummy's plot, backstory, and lore is surprisingly dense and complex. With that being said, there's bound to be a couple of plot inconsistencies here and there. One mild criticism that's often brought up revolves around how Imhotep could possibly mistake Evelyn for his beloved, Anck-su-namun, considering they look nothing alike.
However, this so-called plothole is easy to explain. To regenerate his body, Imhotep took the eyes of Bernard Burns, who is essentially blind without his spectacles. According to the director's commentary, Imhotep was bestowed with Bernard's poor eyesight, which is why the reanimated corpse mistook Evelyn for his lover. This also explains why Imhotep squints when he first encounters Evelyn since he has trouble seeing her face.
