20 Things You Somehow Missed In Top Gun

17. The Title Is Ironic

Contrary to what some believe, Top Gun is a real division in the Navy (although it's phrased as the singular word "Topgun"). In the beginning of the movie, Viper explains to the Topgun cadets that American soldiers have become less efficient at killing on the battlefield because they've become too reliant on advanced weaponry like missiles. Believing soldiers were losing their dogfighting skills, Topgun was formed so new recruits could fine-tune their firearm skills.

In principle, this idea seems logical. So, how do the Topgun pilots defeat the enemy?

With missiles. Our heroes never use guns at any point. In fact, not one single character fires a bullet throughout the entire movie. Considering the title was meant to highlight the pilots' efficiency with guns, you'd think one of the scriptwriters would've noticed this detail.
