20 Things You Somehow Missed In Top Gun

14. A Stunt Pilot Was Killed While Filming

Top Gun
Paramount Pictures

In the closing credits, it is mentioned that "this film is dedicated to the memory of Art Scholl". Since Top Gun was released in a time when one couldn't google-search a name in an instant, many viewers had no idea who this individual was and why the movie was dedicated to himArt Scholl was the pilot who performed the most dangerous stunts in the film. Considering he was an aeronautic specialist for over 25 years and an aeronautic professor, there were few pilots on the planet who were more qualified than Scholl.

Tragically, Scholl died during production when he was unable to recover from a flat spin. Just before he crashed into the Pacific Ocean, he said, "I have a problem - I have a real problem". To this day, no one knows what caused Scholl to lose control of his aircraft.
