20 Times Directors You Trust Totally Let You Down
5. The Wachowskis - The Matrix Revolutions
The Director:
One of cinema's most famous sibling directing duos, Lily and Lana Wachowski (Formerly Andy and Larry) are talented science-fiction filmmakers who never fail to get people excited, even if their track record is inconsistent.
The Film:
The Matrix Reloaded isn't as bad as you remember. If you forget the Architect and the Zion rave (AKA maybe the single worst movie moment of that decade), there's more than enough action and entertainment to keep it moving along nicely.
The Matrix Revolutions more than deserves the hate though. It's a bewildering mess, with most of the action dedicated to a bland and generic Zion battle and ending with an even more underwhelming superman finale with Neo and Agent Smith having a painfully over-the-top punch-up. Lacking in charm, soul and charisma, Revolutions abandons the characters in favor of underwhelming set-pieces.
As for the Wachowskis, they largely failed to bring their usual style to proceedings, and Revolutions is nowhere near as visually stunning as the last two films. It's a sad end to a once-great franchise.
Have They Bounced Back?
They're doing OK outside of their solo directional outings. They did Sense8 for Netflix, wrote V for Vendetta and co-directed the wonderful Cloud Atlas, so they've still got it to some extent. On the other hand, Speed Racer and Jupiter Ascending were both disappointments.
