20 Underappreciated Blockbusters That Are Much Better Than You Remember

13. Last Action Hero

Last Action Hero
Columbia Pictures

Now a fully-fledged cult classic, nobody was really sure what to make of the Last Action Hero's postmodern take on the summer blockbuster. Of course, it doesn't help that it was obliterated at the box office by Jurassic Park, but time has mostly been kind to John McTiernan's $85m oddity.

While it may feature one of the most irritating child actors in all of cinema and became a victim of its own premise (the original script was designed to lampoon the Shane Black style of action flick and ended up being rewritten... by Shane Black), the Last Action Hero is still an entertainingly self-referential and frequently inventive blockbuster, with the Hamlet scene in particular a scene of meta brilliance.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
