20 Upcoming Movie Sequels That Could Be HUGE Improvements

These upcoming movie sequels just might be WAY better than what came before.

Sequels are of course the bread and butter that sustains Hollywood, because giving audiences more of what they've dug before is simply a much safer bet than bankrolling an original idea.

Yet despite their commercial potential, sequels are tough to pull off artistically because they require filmmakers to deliver an experience that's consistent with what came before while also feeling like something new.

Countless sequels have failed because they either strayed too far from what viewers loved the first time, or felt like a lazy rehash of the original concept.

But where upcoming sequels are concerned, these 20 just might have what it take to be serious improvements on the first.

From video game adaptations promising a far more faithful treatment this time, to belated sequels touting a back-to-basics approach, and those that seem determined to build on what came before, these follow-ups all have the potential to be massively superior.

Potential is only potential of course, so it remains to be seen if these films have the actual follow-through to top the previous film, but from what we've seen and heard so far, there's a strong chance they pull it off...

20. Mortal Kombat 2

2021's Mortal Kombat reboot was fine - it certainly delivered a bevy of bloody action as fans of the video game franchise would expect, but it certainly left a lot to be desired on the story and character front.

For one, where the hell was Johnny Cage?

But the impending sequel - titled Mortal Kombat II - seeks to rectify that glaring omission, with the great Karl Urban roped in to play the fan favourite martial artist-slash-movie star.

The trailers certainly suggest that Urban is having a ton of fun playing Cage, and in addition to this, the sequel will also introduce other iconic "kombatants" such as Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), Jade (Tati Gabrielle), Quan Chi (Damon Herriman), Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen), and Baraka (CJ Bloomfield).

But perhaps the biggest relief to fans is that the protagonist of the first film, Cole Young (Lewis Tan), appears to have been relegated to glorified cameo duty this time around.

Given that he was an original creation for the first movie and functioned as a rather pointless audience surrogate character, the fact that his presence is being seriously curtailed should help make Mortal Kombat 2 a vastly superior sequel.
