20 Useless Things You Probably Never Knew About Star Wars
16. Mark Hamill Wanted A Mrs Skywalker
In truth, Luke Skywalker gets a pretty rough deal out of the original trilogy of films: he realises the only available woman in the galaxy is his sister, gets brutally attacked by a Wampa, has an entire Imperial Army seeking him out, gets electrocuted, and ends up with one living relative after his aunt and uncle are burned and his Dad kicks the bucket.
It's understandable that Mark Hamill would want to improve his character's fortunes somewhat, but George Lucas wasn't budging on his plan for young Skywalker. Hamill even suggested that Lucas create a love interest for Luke to be introduced in Return of the Jedi, and offered the Star Wars head honcho some creative material.
Hamill purchased a book for Lucas to peruse which was full of sci-fi artwork, including lots of images of females that might be suitable for Luke to become romantically involved with. Obviously, this didn't happen but the Expanded Universe had the Jedi Master covered - Mara Jade Skywalker offered EU Luke everything Hamill ever wanted for his character.
