7. A Girl Walks Home At Night (2014)
A Girl Walks Home at Night is without a doubt one of the strangest vampire movies to find its way onto this list - and that's saying something. As an unusual hybrid between a vampire movie and a David Lynch film, shot in a spaghetti western-like fashion, this Iranian comedy/horror/drama is a recent cinematic gem of the highest order - not one to be avoided on account of subtitles. It's the sort of picture that hypnotises you from the off through a deft blend of visuals, atmosphere and sudden bursts of violence. Not at all the sort of film you'd expect out of Iran, that's for sure. Set in "Bad City," a fictional locale taking its inspirations from both American and Iranian culture, the plot - deliberately slow-paced throughout - concerns a young guy named Arash and his dealings with a shapeshifting female vampire, played by Sheila Vand, who stalks the streets at night, praying on the locals. There's so much going on in A Girl Walks Home at Night - and so much subtext, if you're looking for it - that it's hard to know what, exactly, to make of it in one viewing. What you won't be unsure of, however, is how original - and how special - it is.
