17. Scanners And The Exploding Head

Canadian director David Cronenberg has a reputation for mainly trading in "body horror", a loosely-defined sub-genre of the subtle horror/sci-fi blends his created for the majority of his career (before moving onto his current, much more dignified fare like A Dangerous Method and, erm, Eastern Promises). He started as he meant to go on with early effort Scanners, about a war errupting between people with crazy psychic powers. One of the most iconic scenes from the film involves a news anchor's head being exploded, an effect achieved by stuffing a fake head with dog food and rabbit livers, then blasting it from behind with a twelve gauge shotgun.
