20 Worst Best Picture Film Nominees Since 2010

2. Les Miserables

Bohemian Rhapsody
Universal

Most of the films nominated for Best Picture since the 2011 ceremony are certainly not bad movies, even if many of them weren't necessarily among the top ten films of that year. Les Miserables is in a very different category, for there's a strong argument to be made that is, all things considered, a terrible movie.

Aside from the mostly strong performances, Les Miserables really doesn't have much to recommend it. Tom Hooper's direction is flat, the music is surprisingly tedious, the story is too hard to follow and it isn't a tenth as emotionally powerful as it should've been.

The film is overall a dull, empty viewing experience and since it's such a flawed film that got deservedly mixed reviews at the time of its release, this was a downright inexplicable Best Picture nominee that shouldn't have been there at all.

As has been discussed throughout this list, the 2013 Best Picture line-up was very disappointing; to be fair, 2012 wasn't a particularly great year for films but there were still so many far better alternatives.

From left-field picks like Looper and Skyfall to more Oscar-friendly greats like The Master, Moonrise Kingdom and The Impossible, there were plenty of fabulous 2012 films that deserved nominations FAR more than this thoroughly underwhelming mess, not to mention the aforementioned Lincoln, Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty.
