20 Worst Best Picture Film Nominees Since 2010

16. Midnight In Paris

Bohemian Rhapsody
Sony Pictures Classics

It feels a bit unfortunate to put a film as nice and well-meaning as Midnight in Paris on this list, but there it is.

Midnight in Paris is fine. It's absolutely fine. It's well-acted, heart-warming, features some delightful representations of historical figures and is generally entertaining so once again, it's absolutely fine. The trouble is that it doesn't really go beyond that level.

It does just feel a bit too slight for its own good and it's not as funny or emotionally affecting as it could've been. Therefore, there's an unfortunate sense that it's just going the motions.

It was a very odd choice for a Best Picture nominee, since such light-hearted fluff would never normally get a look in. Woody Allen being in the director's chair - and this film seeming like something of a comeback for him after an increasingly hit-or-miss output in recent times - is probably what helped it score a nod but even then, Midnight has none of the power of earlier Allen films like Annie Hall or Hannah and Her Sisters.

Therefore, this really wasn't a deserved inclusion. Unfortunately, this is only the first of many 2012 Best Picture nominees you'll see on this list. That year's line-up was just horrendous.
