20 Worst Best Picture Film Nominees Since 2010

12. Jojo Rabbit

Bohemian Rhapsody
Fox Searchlight

You certainly can't fault Taika Waititi's satire for its superb cast or deft technical values, but ultimately it doesn't quite work.

It was a controversial film (which makes its nomination for Best Picture very surprising) but does it live up to this hype? Well, yes and no. On the one hand, this is an often uncomfortable viewing due to its overly flippant representation of history but on the other hand, this film isn't actually as audacious as it sounds.

It doesn't use its bold premise to say anything very much and offers little more than basic anti-racism messages and ill-judged comedy. It's a movie that puts you through loads of uncomfortable moments but provides little food for thought, making it a great example of a film that thought it was deep but is actually kind-of shallow.

It's absolutely inexplicable that voters thought this (as well as Joker and Ford Vs. Ferrari) was a worthy inclusion over truly great films like Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Ad Astra, The Lighthouse, The Farewell, Knives Out, Pain and Glory, Uncut Gems, Avengers: Endgame, Booksmart and Rocketman.
