5. Awake
Nothing frustrates quite like a neat premise wasted, and that's certainly the case with Netflix's new sci-fi thriller vehicle Awake, which takes place after a global catastrophe has wiped out all electronics worldwide and eliminated humanity's ability to sleep.
It might be the obvious joke, but audiences may struggle to stay conscious throughout this painfully boring, molasses-slow thriller, which lazily attempts to ape the tone and aesthetic of numerous superior apocalyptic genre films.
Gina Rodriguez's solid performance aside, this is an absolute slog despite its seemingly tight 96-minute runtime, racing through a hurried first act before slowing to a crawl for the remaining hour-or-so.
That a film starring Rodriguez, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Barry Pepper can be so lifeless and unappealing should be a federal crime.
