20 Worst Movies Of 2021 (So Far)
3. Music
Perhaps the year's most aggressively loathed film - and certainly the most controversial on social media - Sia's directorial debut Music is a well-intended if ultimately clumsy depiction of autism.
Sia's teen muse Maddie Ziegler - who, it has to be said, isn't herself autistic - gives a queasy, offensively stereotypical performance that's big on gurning and explosive bodily tics but low on anything approaching actual nuance.
Even with Sia's intent being what it is, the script nevertheless reduces Ziegler's titular protagonist to a prop designed to elevate the agency of the film's actual protagonist, her sister Zu (Kate Hudson).
Despite the obvious work that went into choreographing the musical numbers, this is painfully cack-handed storytelling and an absolute failure where representation is concerned.
But what truly makes Music terrible is its contentious depiction of the highly dangerous prone restraint technique Zu uses to control her sister during a breakdown. The backlash was significant enough that Sia ended up removing the scene from later releases of the movie.
Music went on to win Worst Director, Worst Actress, and Worst Supporting Actress Razzies for Sia, Hudson, and Ziegler respectively. Yikes.
