20 WTF Moments From The Resident Evil Movies
17. The Best Movie Has The Least To Do With The Games (Resident Evil)
Oh, sweet irony, that the very best of the five movies to date is in fact the one that probably has the least to do with the source material.
The original 2002 movie features a mansion for about three minutes, there's the Umbrella corporation and the T-virus, but the rest of the plot, from The Hive to the Red Queen, and protagonist Alice, is all invented solely for the movie.
While the subsequent movies basically introduced random characters and situations from the games such as Nemesis, the Las Plagas parasite, the mind-control scarab and so on, it's the first film that best captured the corny but gleefully entertaining B-movie quality of the original game.
The subsequent movies mostly suffered from a monotonous overdose of CGI that became more tiresome with each new installment. The first, however, is a not-quite-trashy gem of the zombie genre, despite baring the least similarity to the video games.
James Cameron considers it his favourite guilty pleasure, so there you have it.
