2022 Oscars: 6 Awards They Got Right (And 6 Awards They Royally Screwed Up)

9. Will Smith Wins Best Actor

King Richard/The Eyes of Tammy Faye Socars
ABC

Beat: Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog), Andrew Garfield (tick, tick... BOOM!) and Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth).

Setting aside from the slap for just one minute, Will Smith completely earned the Best Actor Oscar he received on the night.

King Richard is a mediocre biopic in most ways, but Will Smith gave a brilliant and heartfelt performance which proved that, even though Will Smith is best-known for being a Hollywood A-lister, he's also a masterful dramatic actor.

Benedict Cumberbatch would also have been a worthy winner but honestly, this really felt like Smith's night. He was not only absolutely great in the film itself, but after so many strong performances over the years - and given that, in recent times, the quality of his film choices has dipped and he's become pretty underrated as an actor - it was very, very satisfying to see him finally win an Oscar on his third nomination.
