19. Stu Is Alive - Scream 7
The Rumour:
When Matthew Lillard was announced to be reprising his role as killer Stu Macher in Scream 7, some fans took it as confirmation that Stu was in fact still alive.
After all, there have been theories for years that Stu might've (somehow) survived having a CRT TV dumped on his head by Sidney (Neve Campbell) at the end of the first Scream, especially as Wes Craven's original plan for Scream 3 would've indeed revealed Stu to still be alive.
The Truth:
In actuality, the presence of "Stu" throughout Scream 7 is a mere AI deepfake cooked up by the new killers to taunt Sidney.
This was hardly a surprising outcome, though, because with numerous other departed characters also being announced to return alongside Stu before release, AI was the only option that really made much sense at all.
Needless to say, Stu coming back from the dead would've been a franchise-derailing jumping-the-shark moment.
But alas, according to Lillard himself, he did film a post-credits scene revealing Stu to be alive, yet it was ultimately scrapped due to a confused test screening response, thankfully.
