21 Actors You Didn't Know Were Almost Cast In Star Wars

1. Benicio Del Toro Almost Played Darth Maul

Del Toro Darth Maul Though performance actor and stuntman Ray Parks scored a serious win in fans' eyes thanks to his performance as the mostly silent Darth Maul (his voice would later be dubbed out by British comic Peter Serafinowicz for what dialogue did exist), he was not the first choice to play the instantly iconic villain. We could have been robbed of Parks' phenomenal physical performance as the Sith apprentice had the original script remained intact, as Benicio Del Toro - soon to reprise his similarly odd-looking role as The Collector in the MCU - was originally cast as Maul but left the project when George Lucas made some of his now characteristic changes. Del Toro apparently wasn't happy that the majority of Maul's dialogue had been removed, and moved on to allow Parks to take on the role. While it's an intriguing thought to imagine a more loquacious Maul, ultimately this is one change that Lucas deserves credit for, as he didn't allow himself to spoil Maul with a terrible script.
