16. Eighth Grade (2018)

Ex Machina
A24

Bo Burnham's instant classic coming-of-age passion project Eighth Grade follows 14-year-old vlogger Kayla (Elsie Young) as she battles a fixation on social media and her recent issues with panic attacks and anxiety.

Much like Lady Bird, the drama is a striking and often painfully realistic depiction of growing up, but comes with the emotional bonus of tackling tricky themes such as mental health, single parenthood, and the overwhelming pitfalls of social media.

Honest, awkward and hopeful, Eighth Grade offers audiences a snapshot into the life of the modern teenager with compelling results, none of which would have been possible without Burnham's deeply personal script and Fisher's raw performance driving its themes forward.
