24 Movie Villains Who Weren't Really Bad

19. Hans Gruber in Die Hard

I€™ve always felt through repeated viewings of Die Hard that John McClane is the real villain of the movie. Gruber and co and nowhere near prepared for the sheer brutality that McClane unleashes upon them. Gruber does murder Takagi in cold blood €“ but that is nothing compared to the sheer psychotic insanity McClane perpetrates on Gruber€™s crew. At one point in the showdown with the über-henchman Karl, McClane screams: €œI€™m gonna kill you, then I€™m gonna cook you, then I€™m gonna fucking eat you!€ Not to mention Karl is trying to get McClane in revenge for killing his brother and after McClane taunts him. He actually taunts him after killing his brother! Hans Gruber who wants to steal bearer bonds in a terrifically executed heist is the villain? Are you kidding me?

18. Sandman (Spider-Man 3)

Any of Spiderman€™s cinematic antagonists could have been mentioned here, seeing as they all simply refuse to do evil for the sake of being evil. They all arbour a deep motivation that turns into an unfortunate obsession despite their best intentions, yet Sandman is the one to truly sympathise with: His daughter is sick. That makes it okay to break the law. Right?!? Need further proof that this bad guy is indeed a good bloke at heart? Ol€™ web crawler forgives him for Uncle Ben's death and lets him sprinkle away in the wind instead of sticking him into a dirt devil.
