25 Amazing Concept Designs From Sci-Fi Movies In Development Hell

3. BioShock

Adapting video games to the big screen has nearly always been a doomed venture - ever since the release of the dreadful waste of space Super Mario Bros in 1993 (a film which seemed to go out of its way to ignore the vibrant colourful worlds created by Shigeru Miyamoto) interesting gaming realms have shattered on the rocks of the Hollywood studio. If there's any franchise which contains all the cinematic elements from the get-go to succeed as a motion picture, Take-Two's BioShock is certainly one of them. Set in the distinct world of Rapture, infused with the trapping of Art Deco, the production design has essentially been handed to the film producers on a plate.
The concept art created by Kasra Farahini during the phase of production which saw Gore "Pirates Of The Caribbean" Verbinski taking the helm certainly indicates a close adherence to the look and feel of the game. Unfortunately they also clearly hint at the kind of production costs required to get such a project off the ground.
To Verbinski's credit, he insisted on the film adaptation of BioShock being R-rated (any other rating would have obviously diluted the darker tone of the source material). Predictably the studios didn't see eye to eye, and rejected his ultimatum - and the proposed budget of $200 million - effectively rendering the project dead in the water. The future of the game franchise is currently uncertain, which could mean the chances of BioShock the movie being revived are slim. But with the license still in the hands of 2K Marin, a new entry and Xbox One and PS4 could turn the franchise's fortunes around overnight, surely a great prospect for both gamers and film fans.
