25 Astonishingly Dumb 21st Century Film Oscar Wins

6. 2020: Jojo Rabbit Wins Best Adapted Screenplay

Beat: The Irishman, Joker, Little Women and The Two Popes.

The 2020 Oscars, which saw Parasite score the most deserved surprise victory imaginable, were actually incredibly satisfying for the most part and there were only two categories they really screwed up: Laura Dern winning Best Supporting Actress for a fairly unchallenging role and Jojo Rabbit winning Best Adapted Screenplay.

Still, Dern's win isn't quite so jarring because she was in a very weak field; Jojo Rabbit's win is a different story.

In writing terms, Jojo Rabbit really isn't all that. It's got some powerful moments, but in the end it was a tone-deaf, ill-judged comedy that only used its audacious premise as a vessel for delivering some very basic, shallow anti-racism messages and a predictable coming-of-age arc.

It's amiable and touching enough, but to imply it's an Oscar-worthy script is simply laughable. To make matters worse, it beat out four superior screenplays.

The Irishman and Little Women in particular are both outstanding masterworks of writing and although neither Joker nor The Two Popes are great films, they are good ones and their screenplays were far better than Jojo Rabbit's.

The only Oscar-worthy thing that was actually in Jojo Rabbit was Thomasin McKenzie's stunning supporting performance... and she wasn't even nominated. Ridiculous.
