25 Best British Films Of The Last Decade

25. Kill List

Ben Wheatley's second feature is a horror film like I've never seen before. Neil Maskell plays Jay, a soldier returning home from Kiev who is clearly still haunted by what went on there. He and his buddy Gal (Michael Smiley) decide to become contract killers, though as they carry out their various assassinations, they begin to encounter strange behaviours from their targets: they seem all too willing, almost grateful to die, as though there's something Jay and Gal haven't quite been clued in on. It would be criminal to spoil the third reel, but needless to say, the film takes an unexpected left-turn which won't necessarily work for all viewers, but if you're able to roll with the punches, it leads to an extremely shocking and unsettling climax. Superbly acted and incredibly atmospheric, British horror has rarely been this brilliant.
