Martin McDonagh's feature film debut instantly put him on the map as a distinctive voice of British film, as he told the story of two hitmen, Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson), who are sent to Bruges by their boss (Ralph Fiennes) after Ray botches a job and ends up killing a boy. Ken is then ordered to assassinate Ray, leading to a darkly hilarious romp as the two try to find a way out of their situation, while pondering the meaninglessness of existence and taking in the beautiful sights of the city. It's an endlessly quotable movie, with my personal favourite line being Fiennes' scream to his wife, "You are an inanimate f***ing object!" The three central performances are superb, the Tarantino-esque dialogue is unexpectedly witty, and it all leads to an insane climax that is like nothing I've ever seen.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
