Most Recent Film: Mistress America (2015) Next Film: The Emperor's Children (TBA) Best Film: Frances Ha (2012) If you're yet to see a Noah Baumbach film, then you've failed to discover a tiny, undeniably brilliant corner of cinema - one filled with some of the best films in recent years. That's not an attempt at overstatement: it just feels wrong that a true lover of cinema could have missed out on gems such as The Squid And The Whale, Frances Ha, and - more recently - the wonderful Mistress America. On the surface, there's a sense that Baumbach's films are "quirky indie tosh," but actually watching them reveals them to be beautiful character studies honing in on lost people just trying to find their place in the world. Baumbach seems to be growing with confidence with every new feature, and Mistress America - which stars his frequent collaborator, muse and now girlfriend Greta Gerwig - was recently released to critical acclaim. It's not quite Frances Ha, which is romantic and subtle all without really knowing it, but it is proof that Baumbach is one of the 21st century's most interesting and unique filmmakers; you count down the days to his next movie.
