8. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu

Most Recent Film: Birdman (2014) Next Film: The Revenant (2015) Best Film: Birdman (2014) We have only so far seen a teaser trailer for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's upcoming western movie, The Revenant, and already you can tell that it's going to be something akin to a modern masterpiece. With Leonardo DiCaprio poised as the lead and cinematography by the inimitable Emmanuel Lubezki, it's already a reasonable contender for best film of 2015. Inarritu shot to global fame when Birdman took home the Award for Best Picture at this year's Oscar ceremony. It was a strange and unexpected decision on the Academy's part, but the subject matter - Hollywood itself - presumably cemented the win in a room full of people whose lives are guided by such a place. Birdman is a great film, regardless, and it was Inarritu taking a step into a much larger world off the back of 21 Grams, Babel and Biutiful (all flawed, but each and every one undeniably interesting nonetheless). The world is now Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's oyster, and having his name attached to a Leonardo DiCaprio picture is going to bring major opportunity. You get the sense the Inarritu has always strived to create artful, intelligence movies, and yet with Birdman - a black comedy - he somehow found his calling in satire. The future looks very, very bright.
