25 Best Directors In The World Right Now

18. Bong Joon-ho

Most Recent Film: Snowpiercer (2013) Next Film: N/A Best Film: Memories Of Murder (2003) South Korean director Bong Joon-ho deals in masterful genre movies; they're his bread and butter, and there's arguably no director in the world who does them as well as he does. Thus far, then, his eclectic career has consisted of a serial killer flick (Memories Of Murder), a monster movie (The Host), an eerie melodrama (Mother) and a crazy sci-fi comic book adaptation (Snowpiercer). It would be outright wrong to suggest that any of them were anything less than brilliant, and it's exciting to ponder where, exactly, Bong will go next. Bong Joon-ho's films are often remembered for their outright gorgeous visual stylings and tone shifts. Indeed, The Host starts off with the feel of a horror movie before becoming something completely different, whilst Memories Of Murder shifts between scenes of darkness and light-hearted slapstick. In another filmmaker's hands, this would be detrimental, but Joon-ho has such a grasp on his material that it all somehow works.
