Just when we thought that there couldn’t be anything new accomplished with the vampire genre, along comes Oscar-winning Kiwi filmmaker Taika Waititi alongside co-writer and director Jermaine Clement to give us mockumentary vampire film What We Do In The Shadows.

Set in modern-day New Zealand, the film chronicles the painfully mundane life of a group of vampire flatmates leading up to the Unholy Masquerade, a prestigious event in New Zealand’s supernatural community.

Starring Waititi and Clement alongside Jonny Brugh and Ben Fransham as the documentary's subjects, the screenplay is loaded with the writers’ style of deadpan comedy. Seeing these creatures of the night argue about doing the dishes and learning how to use the internet makes for some of the biggest laughs in recent years, and then there’s the ongoing rivalry between the vampires and a group of mild-mannered werewolves that'll have you howling with laughter.

A vampire film like nothing you’ve seen before, What We Do In The Shadows is just one example of Waititi’s comic genius.
