While Swedish director Tomas Alfredson’s multi award-winning and critically acclaimed Let The Right One In (based on the novel of the same name by John Ajvide Lindqvist) still falls into the category of being a vampire film, what makes it stand out as a modern horror masterpiece is that it’s not actually about vampires. Instead, it’s a meditative exploration of a blossoming romance between two children: the bullied and angst-ridden Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant) and the mysterious Eli (Lina Leandersson), who happens to be a vampire.

Beautifully shot to create an off-kilter tone that amplifies the film’s central theme of adolescence and the strange companionship at the heart of the plot coupled with outstanding performances from the entire cast, Let The Right One In is a tour de force of modern filmmaking. While some of the main elements of the novel were cut from the film, Alfredson took the opportunity to focus more heavily on the central relationship between the leads as they gradually realise how much they need each other.

A macabre romance that’s incredibly touching, Let The Right One In is arguably the best love story and best vampire film that’s ever been put to screen.
