25 Best Werewolf Movies Ever Made
11. Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man
As stated right at the start, multi-monster movies tend to leave the werewolf on the sidelines. That's why none of them have been deemed worthy of a place on this list (even good ones like Monster Squad). None, that is, except for this, the first monster mash-up.
By the time that Universal realised in 1943 that potentially dwindling returns on their individual monster franchises could be averted with a crowdpleasing crossover event, they had already made four Frankenstein films and original star Boris Karloff had moved on from playing the monster. The Wolf Man, however, had only had a single movie and so had plenty of remaining story potential.
The net result is that Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man basically plays out like a Wolf Man sequel with Lon Chaney Jr.'s werewolf character Lawrence Talbot front and centre. The story features Talbot being accidentally resurrected and traveling to Europe to seek a cure for his lycanthropy from the now dead Dr Frankenstein. It is only then that he encounters the doctor's monstrous creation and the two get to fight at the movie's climax.
Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man is largely disposable fun rather than one of Universal's monster classics, but its legacy is immense. In pioneering the crossover movie it not only led to several more Universal team-ups (including the recent failed "Dark Universe"), but also to Godzilla fighting King Kong, Freddy Krueger fighting Jason Voorhees and even Iron Man fighting Captain America and the whole modern "shared universe" trend.
