25 Best Werewolf Movies Ever Made
21. Ginger Snaps: Unleashed
Werewolf sequels are pretty invariably exercises in barrel-scraping dreck. Even the most forgiving fans of hairy moonlit beasts would do well to steer clear of An American Werewolf In Paris or Howling III: The Marsupials. The Ginger Snaps series, however, is remarkable in maintaining some quality across its two follow ups.
Like the first Ginger Snaps, the downbeat sequel follows a protagonist slowly and gradually transforming into a werewolf throughout the film. This time it's the introverted Brigitte who, having seen her sister go through a similar transformation in the first movie, does everything to try and manage it. This is a path which involves self-harm, rehab and provocative visions of her dead sister.
In this sequel, though, that sisterly bond is replaced as the central relationship with Brigitte's increasing dependency on the apparently cheery and childlike, but increasingly manipulative and abusive, fellow rehab patient Ghost (an impressive debut film performance from Tatiana Maslany, who would go on to great things playing every lead role in Ginger Snaps director John Fawcett's Orphan Black).
It might not quite hit the darkly satirical delights of its predecessor, and was a box office flop, but Unleashed is that rare werewolf sequel that genuinely moves the story and characters on in interesting ways.
