A very different proposition from the angsty MTV teen drama that shared its name and ran for six seasons in the 2010s, the original Teen Wolf is an extraordinarily cheesy 80s comedy that leans heavily on the charms of Michael J. Fox and the inherent dumb fun of a basketball-playing werewolf.

A piece of lighthearted fluff, Teen Wolf is pretty disinterested in the horror potential of becoming a monster, even if it does draw on the same well of "werewolf as adolescent puberty metaphor" as anything from I Was A Teenage Werewolf to Ginger Snaps. Instead, here the "curse" inherited from his father simply allows Fox's average high school mediocrity to become the dunking sports star, become super popular and get the girl.

The whole thing is overwhelmingly naff, but Fox turns on all of his Back To The Future charisma and it is hard not to be won over by a werewolf surfing through suburbia on the roof of a van.

Fox-free sequel Teen Wolf Too, on the other hand, confirms everything mentioned earlier about the uniform dreadfulness of werewolf sequels.
