21. The Whitewashing Plot Twist - Ghost In The Shell

The controversial live-action Ghost in the Shell adaptation received a lot of flak for whitewashing protagonist Motoko Kusanagi, by renaming her Mira Killian and casting the very Caucasian Scarlett Johansson to play her.

As if this wasn't bad enough, the movie made things a whole lot worse by trying to incorporate the controversy into its plot, by revealing in act three that Mira is actually the original Japanese woman named Motoko, but has had her memory wiped and her brain placed inside a shell resembling a white woman.

Some argued that it was a brave, ambitious attempt to tackle the controversy head-on, but it ultimately came off more tone-deaf than anything, and a desperate attempt to allow the filmmakers to say, "We got there first!" when the whitewashing accusations came rolling in.

Whitewashing is still whitewashing, and being this patently aware of it is arguably worse than just being ignorant about it.
