While there's inevitably some disdain around Hollywood's unimaginative culture of remaking movies, it does at least suggest that there are a number of films that the industry recognise are so well-loved that they deserve several goes. Seven Samurai is one of those exalted few, thanks to the amount of times it's been remade in some way or referenced heavily (from sources as diverse from the original as Pixar).

As a true indication of its brilliance, Seven Samurai is classed as Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece, which is obviously no small accolade either. It's definitely worthy of that praise too, offering one of the definitive hero stories of the cinematic age and essentially inventing the idea of heroes for hire for several generations of movie-goers.

It's also technically brilliant (hence the critical adulation) to go along with its entertainment factor and the transitions between tones are what truly make it.
