25 DVD Easter Eggs You Need To See Before You Die

1. Gollum's Twin Towers Acceptance Speech

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUNYCGZMtI8 The indisputable king of the unexpected uses of computer generated characters has to go to Weta, however. The New Zealand special effects house that managed to generate the epic battle scenes in Peter Jackson's JRR Tolkien adaptations were certainly deserving of an MTV Movie Award for their work on the second Lord Of The Rings film, the Two Towers, which also saw the first proper appearance of Andy Serkis as Gollum. Not Serkis in a Gollum costume, of course, but a motion captured performance that the VFX boffins turned into a frighteningly realistic and creepy CGI character that interacted with the likes of Elijah Wood's Frodo Baggins. When it came to the MTV Movie Awards ceremony itself, Serkis was still in New Zealand, working on the then-upcoming third film in the trilogy, The Return Of The King. So instead of accepting the award in person he sent a video speech, filmed at Weta studios itself...only to be cut off mid-sentence by Gollum, who promptly snatched the popcorn-shaped trophy away from the veteran actor in order to bemoan the terrible working conditions Peter Jackson had made him suffer, protesting Serkis taking all the glory for the work he did, and swearing a lot more than Smeagol ever does on screen otherwise. It's bloody hilarious and, after initially airing on MTV, was included as an easter egg on the Extended Edition of the Two Towers DVD. Amongst the feature length documentaries and offer supplemental material that make up those enormous discs it might get lost, but we highly recommend you seek it out. Even if it cuts off the end of the original broadcast where the cameras cut to a wide eye, grinning Elijah Wood as he applauds and clearly mouths the words "that was f***ing awesome." How to find it: On the Extended Edition DVD go to the chapter menu, highlight number thirty, navigate down and press enter. Then keep kids away from the screen.
