25 Incredibly Well-Made Horror Films Directed By Women
9. Karyn Kusama - Jennifers Body (2009)
For all its flaws, lapses in good judgment and good taste, Jennifer's Body is a movie that gets it. Playing with the notion of the hot chick as a man-eater, and reminding millions of teenage girls of the sexual power they may not even realise they have. It's a feminist statement wrapped in gory violence and gratuitous glamour shots of Megan Fox. The smarts obviously begin with screenwriter Diablo Cody, who brings her notorious love-it-or-hate-it hip dialogue mostly through the character of Jennifer (Megan Fox), the kind of popular girl who hangs out with a geek like Needy (Amanda Seyfried) to prop herself up and deliver scathing putdowns ("You need a mani bad. You should find a Chinese chick to buff your situation"). The two friends ultimately have a falling out when Jennifer becomes possessed and turns into a man-eating succubus. The successful horror comedy is a rare and elusive find. Not only does it need to be both scary and funny, but it has to blend the two together in almost perfect symmetry. Some of the best films that strike an ideal balance between terror and laughs include An American Werewolf In London, Return Of The Living Dead, Re-Animator, and Fright Night. Jennifers Body can be added to this list.
