Appearing at the beginning of the movie (before a swarm of misty monsters from the depths of Stephen King€™s imagination start picketing outside a Tesco Express), an establishing scene shows David Drayton (Thomas Jane) hard at work painting in his study. Setting the tone, giving us a bit of background. All in all it€™s nothing out of the ordinary.

Until you look closer at the actual painting, that is.

Recognise that cowboy figure? You probably should if you know your horror and fantasy. Stephen King aficionados spotted the figure a mile away as it€™s very obviously a mock-up of none other than Roland Deschain, the gunslinger hero from his Middle Earth-inspired The Dark Tower series. And it doesn't end there: watch as the camera pans around for a glimpse at another of David€™s pieces. Racked up on a canvas is the unmistakable poster from John Carpenter€™s The Thing.
