Loathed by the authorities and beloved by tens of millions of viewers worldwide, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is a prototypical lovable rogue, a ruthless pirate driven largely by greed, self-interest and booze, but he does have his moments of occasional chivalry, and despite his rough-hewn exterior, is both a terrific fighter and whip-smart. The character's sharp edges are also dulled somewhat by the fact that Sparrow gets himself into so many unnecessary scrapes and bungles so many situations that it's hard not to root for the guy against the odds. This usually prods him to do the right thing, even though it'll often be by accident and something he wouldn't prefer to acknowledge. Depp has mentioned in interviews that he modeled the character from classic rock stars, which is somewhat apt considering what a model of rebellion they have been over the decades. Anti-heroes of the music industry, one could even say.
