Funnily enough, Max Rockatansky is widely believed to be inspired by The Man with No Name (Clint Eastwood) from Sergio Leone's Dollars trilogy, who is also a quiet, mysterious drifter that ends up putting his extreme combat proficiency to use in the name of vengeance, justice, and sometimes money (alright, that latter point's not very Mad Max-esque). Though Eastwood's handsomeness cannot be denied in the role, his gruff visage still puts him at odds with a conventional hero: to anyone who wasn't aware of the movies, his cigar-chomping, beardy gunman could easily be said to look like a gritty antagonist instead. As it turns out, though, the Man with No Name has his own code of ethics and typically only inflicts his violence on those who deserve it. He lashes out for good causes and only against wrongdoers: the average person has nothing to fear from him, and if they're lucky, he might even give them a hand.
