Shrek is an extremely post-modern subversion of the typical animated movie, all the way to making its protagonist not a dashing Prince Charming-type figure, but the total opposite: an irritable, ugly ogre who terrifies the locals and is frequently hunted by them. Hell, the only reason Shrek (Mike Myers) decides to embark on the mission to save Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) is so that all the fairytale creatures will leave his swamp home in peace. There's no sense of magnificence or heroism, just pure self-interest to be left alone. Of course, by the end of the first movie the ogre's callous exterior has (mostly) been worn down and he's much more personable as a heroic character, but even in the (wildly unnecessary) sequels, he was far from the dashing, charismatic fairytale hero most audiences reared on Disney were used to.
