25 Greatest Movie Endings Since 2000

25. Buried (2010)

The Ending: As the coffin he's buried in begins to fill with dirt, truck driver Paul Conroy (Ryan Reynolds) gets a phone call from Hostage Working Group member Brenner, who claims to be closing in on his location. They frantically dig, only to find the corpse of Mark White, another hostage who Brenner previously claimed to Conroy they had successfully rescued. Conroy realises he won't be getting rescued as they're at a different location, the coffin continues to fill up with dirt and the screen cuts to black as Brenner says, "I'm sorry, Paul. I'm so sorry." Why It's Awesome: Because audience expectation dictates that Paul will probably survive after suffering through pure hell, but nope, the movie takes no prisoners, and it's all the more brilliant as a result. If you saw this movie in the cinema, you could literally hear a pin drop when the credits rolled. This is an ending that sucks the air out of any room it plays in.
