It takes all of the charm of an Amblin film, wraps it in a comparatively massive production budget and adds in great child actors (they're few and far between, trust me) with both real world and fantastical world stakes. It's basically the model of how every adventure should happen in young minds sparkling with imagination.

And crucially, even though it is dated by hairstyles and fashion, its such a timeless, nostalgic experience that their choices are almost classifiable as their own trends. It's just that sort of cultural zeitgeist creating movie.
