25 Horror Films You Must Watch Before Halloween

5. Carrie

Ah, remember when Brian De Palma actually could direct his way out of a paper bag? His 1976 adaptation of Stephen King's novel finds in Sissy Spacey a fantastic portrayal of timid, shy high school student Carrie White, who discovers she has telekinetic powers, and uses them to exact revenge on her fellow students at one very messed up prom. Unsurprisingly, Spacek and Piper Laurie (who plays her abusive mother, Margaret) both received Oscar nominations for their fantastic work. In melding supernatural self-discovery with Carrie's own sexual development, De Palma makes a terrifying yet strangely relatable horror flick for young girls everywhere. Best Moment: The ever-iconic prom scene is one of the greatest scenes in any horror film: Carrie finally lets her powers run rampant, killing the vast majority of the prom's attendees in disturbing yet undeniably creative fashion. Sequels: 1999's Carrie: The Rage was a mostly pointless sequel only memorable for the appearance of Amy Irving, who played one of the original film's few survivors, Sue. A 2002 TV remake and 2013 cinematic remake (starring Chloe Moretz) also followed, neither of which were were bothering with.
