After going years without a new horror franchise to sate their blood-lust, genre fans rejoiced when James Wan and Leigh Whannell's insanely successful 2004 horror thriller exploded at the box office. Revolving around an unseen torturer named Jigsaw who puts his victims through a series of demented traps and tests, the film is remembered for its brutal gore, creative traps, and of course, its absolutely insane, nobody-saw-it-coming twist ending. Best Moment: The twist (which it's assumed you'll know by now), that Jigsaw has been in the room with Adam (Whannell) and Dr. Gordon (Cary Elwes) the entire time, playing dead as the gory corpse in the middle of the room. He stands up at the end and exits the dingy bathroom, leaving a terrified Adam to rot. Sequels: In the space of 6 years, Saw enjoyed 6 financially successful (if mostly critically reviled) sequels of variant quality: 2, 3 and 6 are regarded as the best, while 5 is especially criticised, and the finale, Saw 3D, is also frequently called out as a disappointing conclusion. Despite Saw 3D giving the series some pretty concrete closure, an eighth film is reportedly in development, though nobody knows exactly what direction it might take.
