Star Wars' most famous ship almost looked a lot different.

Before the design of the Millennium Falcon was settled on, Ralph McQuarrie's concept sketches featured another familiar looking ship in its place.

After the sleek design of the now-iconic Falcon was finalised, McQuarrie replaced the old ship with one which better suited Han's taste.

The original concept art didn't go to waste, however. The ship once known simply as the "Pirate Ship" was redesigned on a much larger scale, becoming the equally iconic Blockade Runner, the first ship ever seen on Star Wars. Other early pieces of concept art utilising the "Pirate Ship" before it became the Falcon were repurposed almost twenty years later, informing shots of the Naboo cruiser at the start of The Phantom Menace.
