18. Inside The Skull
More than one enrapt film critic has described Kong's uncharted homeland, Skull Island, as a subconscious embodiment of the imagination - a nightmarish state of mind rather than a place. Created almost entirely artificially with matte paintings and O'Brien's prehistoric animal models, the appearance of the island was inspired by the 19th-century woodcarvings of Gustave Dore - such as his visions of Hell for The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
