Interestingly, David Simon has never officially called time on The Wire (although admittedly it now seems highly unlikely that it will ever return). Indeed, he admits that he originally had plans for a sixth season that would explore immigration in Baltimore focusing upon the Latino community in particular. The series never really studied the Latino population of Baltimore in its five seasons, and Simon admits that this is partially due to the fact that none of the writers spoke Spanish or had much knowledge of immigration more generally. However, had the sixth season gone ahead, they would have researched these issues and emphasised them, investigating the friction that is often generated in working class communities with high rates of immigration.
