25 Mind-Blowing James Bond Facts You Need To Know

24. The Bond Series Inspired Many Misconceptions

In Goldfinger, Oddjob coats Jill Masteron in gold, causing her to die from "skin suffocation".

At the time, it was erroneously believed that humans partially breathe through their skin, despite this concept having no medical validation. How would that even work? Even if Jill was covered in gold, what's stopping her from breathing through her nose and mouth?

Bizarrely, this myth was reinforced when rumours circulated that the actress who depicted Jill, Shirley Eaton, died on set while shooting this scene. For the record, she is still alive today.

In The World Is Not Enough, Renard is holding a smouldering stone when his character is introduced. Renard explains how Hindus used to hold scalding rocks to test their devotion. This statement is utterly baseless.

But there is one misconception that Bond bolstered so much that many people still believe it today. In You Only Live Twice, Blofeld mentions that a piranha can strip a human to bone in 30 seconds.

This is completely untrue.

Piranhas are scared of humans and will swim away if they came near them. Piranhas normally eat dead fish.

I'm not sure why we are surprised to learn these "facts" aren't true. It's not like Bond has a reputation for being realistic, does it?
